SCENE VII
Interior: Jackie's house. The doorbell
rings. Jackie races to answer it. Checking
her watch, she furrows her brow,
wondering why they'd be showing up so early.
She opens the door to see Morgan
staring back at her.
JACKIE:
(sighs)
Hi, Morgan.
MORGAN:
Hi.
JACKIE:
Is there something I can help you with?
MORGAN:
(thinking)
No. Um. Oh. Yeah. I got some of
your mail by mistake.
(hands it to her)
I thought you might want it.
JACKIE:
(taking the mail from him)
Thank you, Morgan. I really appreciate
it.
MORGAN:
Yeah, it's no problem. Um ... your
parents went away again?
JACKIE:
Yeah, for the weekend. Why?
MORGAN:
I saw them leave the house a little
while ago. They had luggage.
JACKIE:
(growing uncomfortable)
That's right.
MORGAN:
I didn't think they'd leave you alone
for the weekend again.
JACKIE:
And why is that?
MORGAN:
Because of what happened last year.
JACKIE:
I really don't feel like talking about
that right now, Morgan.
MORGAN:
Oh. Okay.
He starts to turn around and walk
away, but stops and turns back to face her.
MORGAN:
Um ... Jackie?
JACKIE:
Yes?
MORGAN:
Y'know ... I called the police that
night.
JACKIE:
I know, Morgan. And I'm thankful.
MORGAN:
God knows what could've happened to
you if I hadn't. You and Susie
wouldn't even be here right now.
JACKIE:
Actually, Morgan. Ken was dead before
the police got here.
MORGAN:
Oh.
(puts hands in his pockets)
So what have you got planned for tonight?
JACKIE:
I'm having some friends over for a graduation
party.
MORGAN:
(gasps)
A party? Another party?
JACKIE:
That's right.
MORGAN:
Do your parents know about this?
JACKIE:
Morgan, I don't think that's any of
your business.
MORGAN:
Oh.
JACKIE:
Is there anything else?
MORGAN:
No ... no ... uh ... no, that's okay.
JACKIE:
Okay then, because I have to go. My
friends will be here soon.
MORGAN:
Okay. Bye, Jackie.
Jackie gives him a half wave and
closes the door.
